My main challenge for The Flu Season was that the team decided to use an actual kitchen offshoot in a basement theatre as the set. Without any overhead positions except front of house, we turned to the creative use of practicals to light that intimate space. Marcus encouraged my experimentation with clip lights, gelled fluorescents, and table lamps as key sources, which were then reinforced with actual theatrical lighting.
In this play, characters comment upon each others' decisions; Prologue and Epilogue form diametrically opposed opinions to the action, doctors watch their patients fall into and out of love (even as they themselves grow attracted to each other). Color helped to distinguish between the observer and the observed, as well as falling into and out of love.
